Minister of Public Security Sarath Weerasekara has assured that a traffic Police officer who was filmed assaulting two youths in Eravur recently will be charged.
Batticaloa District MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam had brought to light the incident, stating that Police brutality was continuing in the district.
Video footage shared by the MP shows a traffic Policeman assaulting two youths travelling on a motorcycle in Eravur, while the cause for the assault was unknown at the time.
“Police Brutality continues in Batticaloa and will fall on the deaf ears of Minister Sarath Weerasekara,” the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MP had tweeted.
Responding to the matter via a text message to the MP, Minister Sarath Weerasekera said that the Police officer involved in the incident has been interdicted.
He further explained that the Police officer had been inquiring about a road accident and had been measuring the accident site using tape.
At the time the youths on the motorcycle had sped past him dragging the tape for nearly 500 yards without stopping.
The Police officer had thereafter, pursued the youths on his motorcycle and had caught them, after which the incident of assault had taken place, the Minister said.
Minister Sarath Weerasekara pointed out that the Police officer had no right to assault the youths.
He added that the Police officer involved in the incident will be charged. (NewsWire)
