Cabinet has granted approval to amend existing laws applicable to journalists and media institutions.
Media Minister Dullas Alahapperuma submitted the proposal which was approved by the Cabinet.
The Media Minister said that attention had been drawn by now to prepare a Sri Lankan media policy paying special attention to the laws, international laws, operation of national and international media institutions.
The need to build the necessary background to present media personalities with professional skills and education on the use and behaviour of media, including social media was also noted.
The Media Minister also noted that supplying the required facilities for digital technology considering the global trends and developments in the mass media and communication fields was also noted.
As a result, the requirement to amend existing laws and policies and ethics with regard to media personnel and mass media institutions had been recognised.
Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers granted approval to a resolution forwarded by the Minister of Mass Media to appoint a committee with representations of individuals having experience in the fields such as media, marketing, education, law, administration and economy in order to table recommendations to the Cabinet of Ministers for performing the aforesaid activities.
