Proposal submitted to Parliament to abolish Executive Presidency

A proposal was submitted to Parliament today to abolish the Executive Presidency.

The proposal was presented to Parliament by the Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB).

SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara presented the proposal to Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said that the proposal seeks to abolishing the 20th Amendment and amending the 19th Amendment.

The opposition has also proposed that instead of an Executive Prime Minister that a Prime Minister answerable to Parliament be appointed.

The opposition has also proposed a tripartite system of separation of powers.

Premadasa said that the opposition is also proposing the establishment of a National Security Council through the Constitution.

The opposition has also proposed strengthening the independent commissions once again.

Premadasa requested Parliament to support the motion and bring about the change demanded by the public. (Colombo Gazette)
