The Police warned of legal action on protesters engaging in violence during the hartal today.
Police Spokesman, DIG Ajith Rohana said that the public have a right to protest peacefully.
He said that a number of protests have been scheduled in Colombo and other cities around the country.
DIG Ajith Rohana said that anyone can protest peacefully under the Constitution.
He noted that the Constitution protects the right to freedom of expression.
The Police have been informed to protect that right, DIG Ajith Rohana said.
However, he said that if anyone engages in violence then the Police will be forced to enforce the law. (Colombo Gazette)
