United National Party (UNP) Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe is tipped to be appointed as the Prime Minister in the caretaker Government.
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had talks with Wickremesinghe today and discussed the current crisis.
The President is reported to have offered Wickremesinghe the post at the meeting.
A caretaker Cabinet consisting of all the political parties in Parliament will also be appointed.
However, the main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya has refused to join the caretaker Cabinet until the President steps down.
The President said that he hopes to appoint the new Cabinet this week.
Wickremesinghe served as Prime Minister from 2015 – 2019 and prior to that in 2001-2002. (Colombo Gazette)
