Navy detains 9 Indians for poaching in Sri Lankan waters

The Sri Lanka Navy and Coast Guard detained nine Indians for poaching in Sri Lankan waters.

Issuing a statement, the Navy said that it conducted a special operation with the Coast Guard off the Delft Island in Jaffna to chase away Indian trawlers poaching in Sri Lankan waters on Tuesday.

The operation led to two Indian trawlers being seized and nine Indian fishermen being arrested for poaching in Sri Lankan waters.

The trawlers and fishermen were brought to the Kankesanthurai Harbour and were handed over to the Mailadi Fisheries Inspector for onward legal proceedings.

The Navy said that in 2024 it has seized a total of 37 Indian trawlers and arrested 261 Indian fishermen for poaching in Sri Lankan waters. (Colombo Gazette)
