The UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva will discuss Sri Lanka’s human rights issue on the opening day of the September session.
Sri Lanka is listed under Item number 2 of the Session and will be discussed on the opening day of the 57th Session of the UNHRC on 9th September.
The Report of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on the situation of human rights in Sri Lanka will be presented to the Council on 9th September.
The Council will then hold an interactive dialogue on the report.
In its resolution 51/1, the Human Rights Council decided to extend and reinforce the capacity of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to collect, consolidate, analyse and preserve information, and requested OHCHR to enhance its monitoring of and reporting on the situation of human rights in Sri Lanka, including on progress in reconciliation and accountability and on the impact of the economic crisis and corruption on human rights.
The Council was also mandated to present a comprehensive report at the 57th Session that included further options for advancing accountability, to be discussed in the context of an interactive dialogue.
Accordingly, the Council will consider the report of OHCHR on Sri Lanka. (Colombo Gazette)
